Winnipeg, Man. – The action started Sunday with the Women’s Singles final being played on Centre Court in the morning. This is the second championship meeting between the two as they met in the doubles final on Saturday, with Fichman/Jaksic winning the title. Kristie Ahn (USA) was seeded fifth in the draw, and Sharon Fichman was the only Canadian to make it to the finals.
The match started off with Ahn winning the first set 6-2, however, it was the second set where Fichman applied the pressure. The players exchanged games up to Ahn leading 6-5, with Ahn prevailing with a second set win of 7-5. “Sharon is such a competitive woman… for me I wanted to enjoy it as much as possible… and really think of the occasion. I’m in a final”, said Ahn about the match.
Ahn was pleased with her level of play and the strong competition that Fichman brought. Ahn said that even if she would’ve lost, she was pleased with the strength of her performance. Ahn is only one year out of her college career at Stanford University, and has aspirations to make it to the Australia Open qualifiers.
