Winnipeg, Man. – Saturday saw the finals in the Women’s Doubles event as Sharon Fichman (CAN) and Javana Jaksic (SRB) battled Americans Kristie Ahn and Lorraine Guillermo for the top spot. The match took place on Court 5 under the lights with Fichman/Jaksic being victorious with a 6-2, 6-1 championship win. This was the first tournament that Fichman and Jaksic partnered up in, and proved to be a recipe for success. Upon accepting their trophy, Fichman made a special note to thank the tournament committee, and everyone that assisted in making the Winnipeg National Bank Challenger such a great event. This isn’t the last that some of these players will play in Winnipeg. Tomorrow, Kristie Ahn and Sharon Fichman will battle for the Women’s Singles title at 11:00 AM. Both players won their semi-final match in three sets: with Kristie defeating Jaksic 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 and Fichman defeating Michaella Krajicek (NED) 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Winnipeg National Bank Futures Doubles Champions Crowned Friday The Men’s Doubles tournament wrapped up on Friday evening in a thrilling match between the pairs of Luis Martinez (VEN)/Luis Patino (MEX) and Gonzalo Escobar (ECU)/Sora Fukuda (JPN). It was the number one-seed Martinez/Patino that won the championship in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Men’s and Women’s Singles finals will be played Sunday, August 30, with the Women’s final starting at 11:00 AM, and the Men’s final following after.
