PELIWO, FICHMAN ADVANCE TO SEMI-FINALS

Winnipeg, Man. – Men’s and Women’s singles quarter-finals took place at the Winnipeg National Bank Challenger and Winnipeg National Bank Futures on Friday, with eight athletes moving onto the Semi-Finals. Of these eight, two Canadians have earned their ticket to face off for a spot in Sunday’s finals.

Filip Peliwo (CAN) took on the number one-seed Dimitar Kutrovsky for a close first match of the morning. The first set remained tied at 6-all with Peliwo winning the tiebreak 7-4. Peliwo earned a break in the second set and won the match in straight sets 7-6(4), 6-4. Filip will face South Africa’s Fritz Wolmarans [7] in their semi-final match Saturday morning.

In Women’s Singles action, two Canadians were competing today, with Fichman being victorious over seventh-seed Emily Webley-Smith (GBR). Aleksandra Wozniak played a tough first set against Michaella Krajicek (NED), but fell in straight sets 7-5, 6-1.

Fichman continued on in Women’s Doubles action with her partner Jovana Jaksic as they defeated Kopinski and Tjandramulia 6-2, 6-4. They will face off against Kristie Ahn and Lorraine Guillermo – who after falling 0-6 in the first set, battled back to win a spot in the finals with a 0-6, 7-5, 10-6 victory.

Saturday’s matches will start with both Canadians starting first in their semi-final matches, which will start no earlier than 11:00 AM at the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club.
